Martin Meisel

Martin Meisel is Brander Matthews Professor of Dramatic Literature Emeritus at Columbia University, and a former Vice President for Arts and Sciences and former Chair of the Department of English and Comparative Literature. Professor Meisel earned his Ph.D. from Princeton and taught at Rutgers, Dartmouth, and the University of Wisconsin before coming to Columbia in 1968.
His principal teaching and publications have been in comparative European and American Drama, from the Renaissance to Contemporary; he has also taught the nineteenth-century novel; Victorian literature, art, and science; and Irish and Scottish literature and drama. His publications include Shaw and the Nineteenth-Century Theater (1963); Realizations: Narrative, Pictorial and Theatrical Arts in Nineteenth-Century England (1983); and How Plays Work: Reading and Performance (2007).
