Pierre Cachia

Pierre Cachia is Professor of Arabic Languages & Literature Emeritus at Columbia University. He has held faculty appointments at the American University in Cairo and University of Edinburgh, Scotland. His publications include Taha Husayn: His Place in the Egyptian Literary Renaissance, (1956, 2005); Popular Narrative Ballads of Modern Egypt (1989), Arabic Literature - an Overview (2002), and the main article on "Arabic Literature" in 3rd ed. of Encyclopaedia of Islam, started in 2005. At Columbia, he has taught both pre-modern Arabic literature and, his specialty, modern and folk Arabic literature. Since his retirement, he has often taught, with Professor Rachel McDermott, the Colloquium on Major Works from Indian and Middle Eastern Cultures.
