The Society of Senior Scholars at the Heyman Center for the Humanities, the South Asia Institute, and the Department of History present

a talk by Ainslie Embree, Professor Emeritus of South Asian History, on the topic of 

Pakistan and the Burden of Islam.

Ainslie Embree taught South Asian history  at Columbia from 1958 to 1991, where he was, at various times, Director of the Program in Contemporary Civilization, Director of the Southern Asian Institute, co-Chair of the Middle East Languages and Cultures and Department and Chairman, Department of Department of History, and Associate Dean of  SIPA  and Acting Dean. He taught in Indian for ten years and served in the American Embassy as Counselor or Cultural Affairs (1978-1980) and as Special Consultant to Ambassador Frank Wisner, 1994-95. He was Editor, of Pakistan's Westerrn Border Lands and his most recent publication is as one of the editors of the third edition of Sources of Indian Traditions, vol. 2, Modern  India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, (Columbia University Press. 2014).
